US military investigates stealth bomber crash
Canberra (AFP) Feb 23, 2008The US military was investigating on Saturday after a B-2 stealth bomber crashed on take-off from the Pacific island of Guam, the first such incident involving the futuristic craft. Both pilots on board ejected safely as the 1.2-billion-dollar radar-evading plane, with its distinctive triangular shape, went down at Andersen airbase on the remote island, the US air force said. ... more Image From Tornado May Lead To Precise Storm Warnings
Huntsville AL (SPX) Feb 25, 2008An unexpected radar image of airborne debris from the Feb. 6 tornado that killed four people in Lawrence County, Ala., might help scientists develop better tools for warning the public when and where strong tornadoes are on the ground. Scientists in the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) are studying radar data from the early morning tornado ... more NASA And Northrup Grumman Partner To Measure The Immeasurable
Annapolis, MD (SPX) Feb 22, 2008Answering bold questions about life and climate on Earth and other planets is the goal behind a new Space Act Agreement signed between NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector in a ceremony in the Miller Senate Building, Presidential Conference Center West at the Maryland State Capitol in Annapolis. Through the agreement, researchers from the two ... more Counter-IED Effort Helps Drive 23 Billion Dollar EW Systems Market
Newtown CT (SPX) Feb 21, 2008Over the next 10 years, an estimated $23 billion will be spent on the development and production of major EW programs, according to Forecast International's "The Market for Electronic Warfare Systems." Some 35,814 units of leading electronic countermeasures, radar warning receivers, electronic support measures, and other EW systems that make up this analysis are expected to be ... more Northrop Grumman Unveils Active Electronically Scanned Array For F-16
Linthicum MD (SPX) Feb 20, 2008Northrop Grumman unveiled a new company funded program to develop an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) at the Singapore Air Show. The Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) will be a full performance fire control AESA derived from proven AESA technology for light tactical aircraft. SABR is being designed for retrofit to existing F-16 aircraft and can be scaled to fit other platforms and missi ... more |

Laurel MD (SPX) Feb 14, 2008Saturn's orange moon Titan has hundreds of times more liquid hydrocarbons than all the known oil and natural gas reserves on Earth, according to new Cassini data. The hydrocarbons rain from the sky, collecting in vast deposits that form lakes and dunes. The new findings from the study led by Ralph Lorenz, Cassini radar team member from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory ... more Mikros ADEPT Equipment Considered For Baseline In US Navy Cruiser Modernization Program
Fort Washington PA (SPX) Feb 11, 2008Mikros Systems has announced that its ADEPT Radar Test Set equipment is a candidate for inclusion in the equipment baseline of the United States Navy AEGIS Cruiser and Destroyer Modernization program. The ADEPT system, developed by Mikros under the Navy's Small Business Innovation Research program, has been extensively tested by the Navy on land and at sea, and has proven to be ... more Northrop Grumman Showcases Key Capabilities At India's DefExpo 2008
London, UK (SPX) Feb 11, 2008Northrop Grumman will highlight its range of key capabilities including airborne early warning and control systems, fire control radars, unmanned aerial vehicles, ships and naval systems at the DefExpo India 2008 exhibition and conference. Moscow (UPI) Feb 6, 2007 Unlike the Russian radars deployed in Azerbaijan, Belarus and Kazakhstan, the Ukrainian systems are not manned by Russian officers. Both the qualifications of the radars' civilian Ukrainian personnel and the data they provide to Russia are questionable. The Sevastopol radar is the larger of the two problems because unlicensed radio stations of vessels fishing in the Black Sea use the same ... more Kiev Radar Row Set To Inflame Tensions Part One

Paris, France (ESA) Jan 29, 2008Ocean surface currents have long been the focus of research due to the role they play in weather, climate and transportation of pollutants, yet essential aspects of these currents remain unknown. By employing a new technique - based on the same principle as police speed-measuring radar guns - to satellite radar data, scientists can now obtain information necessary to understand better the streng ... more Scientists Get First Images Of Earth Flyby Asteroid 2007 TU24
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 28, 2008Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., have obtained the first images of asteroid 2007 TU24 using high-resolution radar data. The data indicate the asteroid is somewhat asymmetrical in shape, with a diameter roughly 250 meters (800 feet) in size. Asteroid 2007 TU24 will pass within 1.4 lunar distances, or 538,000 kilometers (334,000 miles), of Earth on Jan. 29 at 1 ... more Japan to boost air defences: report
Tokyo (AFP) Jan 27, 2008Japan is to boost its defences against cruise missiles as China increases its air strike capabilities, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Sunday. The defence ministry plans to increase the number of aircraft equipped with airborne warning and control systems and install state-of-the-art radar to allow early detection of precision-guided missiles heading for Japan, the daily said. It is also co ... more Military eyes new robotic vision system
Washington (UPI) Jan 25, 2007 Researchers say the military may employ small robots equipped with advanced three-dimensional vision technology in as little as a year. The U.S. military plans to use three-dimensional flash laser radar-, or ladar-, equipped robots to explore chemically contaminated areas and researchers see the technology reaching the consumer markets shortly thereafter, the Christian Science Monitor r ... more Volcanic deposits may aid lunar outposts
Washington (UPI) Jan 23, 2007 A U.S. study of radar images of the moon suggests deposits from early lunar volcanoes might be useful to astronauts at lunar stations. Bruce Campbell and associates at the National Air and Space Museum said ancient volcanic eruptions on the Moon produced deposits of fine-grained, often glass-rich, pyroclastic material. In some places, such as at the Aristarchus Plateau, the deposits can ... more
