LeoLabs has been selected by AFWERX for a SBIR Phase II contract worth $1.245M to develop S-band 2-D Direct Radiating Array (DRA) technology to address key challenges for the Department of the Air Force (DAF). The Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process, accelerating the small business experience through faster proposal-to-award timelines, expanding opportunities to small businesses, and reducing bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvements in contract execution.

The DAF introduced the Open Topic SBIR/STTR program in 2018, which broadened the scope of innovations funded by the DAF. On May 21, 2024, LeoLabs will begin its project to develop and deliver innovative capabilities to enhance the national defense of the United States.

The importance of enhancing space-based defense systems has become increasingly apparent in recent years. According to a report by the Secure World Foundation, the number of active satellites in orbit has grown significantly, leading to a rise in potential threats from both debris and hostile actors. This growth necessitates advanced tracking and monitoring capabilities, such as those LeoLabs aims to provide with their new radar technology.

"As the number of adversarial satellites in space dramatically increases year over year, we are committed to supporting the U.S. Department of Defense's efforts to enhance tracking of non-cooperative launches, smaller orbital debris, and objects in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO)," says LeoLabs CEO Tony Frazier. LeoLabs has been at the forefront of space debris tracking and collision avoidance, leveraging its network of ground-based radar systems to provide real-time data on objects in low Earth orbit. The company's expertise is expected to significantly bolster the DAF's capabilities in managing space security challenges.
