Radar Clicks Asteroid PicPasadena CA (JPL) Apr 30, 2010 Near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 was "imaged" by the Arecibo Radar Telescope in Puerto Rico on April 19. Data collected during Arecibo's observation of 2005 YU55 allowed the Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to refine the space rock's orbit, allowing scientists to rule out any possibility of an Earth impact for the next 100 years. The space rock was about 2.3 million kilometers (1.5 million miles) from Earth at the time this image of the radar echo was generated. Th ... read more |

Sydney (AFP) April 15, 2010Australian officials Thursday said a "very tired" sailor's simple navigation errors caused a cargo ship to run aground and badly damage the Great Barrier Reef, as two crew faced court over the crash. A preliminary report into the April 3 foundering, which leaked tonnes of oil and threatened a major ecological disaster, said the Chinese officer steering the giant Shen Neng 1 had slept only fo ... more Europe's grounded air forces battle ash cloud
Paris (AFP) April 17, 2010Air forces across Europe struggled to cope as a volcanic ash cloud that has also halted most commercial services swept across the continent from Iceland, officials said Saturday. The Iranians also claimed they plan to develop their own radar systems to replace the aging Russian-built systems they currently deploy. The flurry of Iranian announcements Sunday and Monday concerning the country's air-defense and technological ... read more |
