Seen from space, Easter Island looks anything but egg-shaped. The German Earth observation satellite TerraSAR-X flew over this small and remote volcanic island, acquiring snapshots that show that man-made structures can be seen easily even from space. Chile opened here Tuesday the 16th edition of the International Fair of the Air and Space, with austerity and focus on aiding the victims of the earthquake on Feb. 27.


Chilean President Sebastian Pinera attended the opening ceremony. Some 400 companies from 40 countries are participating in the fair of aeronautics, which will last till March 28. European researchers say they have identified a previously unknown species of proto-human that existed at least 1 million years until about 40,000 years ago.
