NATO Commander Backs Cooperation With Russia On Missile Defense
Washington DC (RIA Novosti) Mar 11, 2010
The new U.S. adoptive approach for European missile defense includes the possibility of using a Russian radar system as part of an integrated system, NATO's top military officer has said. Adm. James G. Stavridis, NATO's supreme allied commander for Europe and commander of U.S. European Command, told the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that he supported the idea of partnering with Russia as a way to enhance security against shared missile threats. Phobos Flyby Success
Koln, Germany (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Mars Express encountered Phobos last night, smoothly skimming past at just 67 km, the closest any manmade object has ever approached Mars' enigmatic moon. The data collected could help unlock the origin of not just Phobos but other 'second generation' moons. Something is not right about Phobos. It looks like a solid object but previous flybys have shown that it is not dense enough to be so ... more

PILLAGING PIRATES
Gadgets galore as Somali pirates spur booming sector
Nairobi (AFP) March 7, 2010
Somali pirates raked in an estimated 60 million dollars in 2009 but the Indian Ocean's ransom hunters have also spurred a much larger industry of ship protection devices. As the 36,000 ships that bottleneck into the Gulf of Aden each year try to dodge marauding pirates and keep a lid on insurance premiums, an astonishing array of inventions has cropped up on the flourishing market. With ... more

TerraSAR-X Images International Space Station
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Mar 05, 2010
On 13 March 2008, the International Space Station (ISS) passed across the field-of-view of Germany's remote sensing satellite, TerraSAR-X, at a distance of 195 kilometres (122 miles) and at a relative speed of 34,540 kilometres per hour (over 22,000 mph). The encounter lasted for about three seconds, but this brief moment was long enough for the synthetic aperture radar on TerraSAR-X to ac ... more

Radar Map Of Buried Martian Ice Adds To Climate Record
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 04, 2010
Extensive radar mapping of the middle-latitude region of northern Mars shows that thick masses of buried ice are quite common beneath protective coverings of rubble. The ability of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to continue charting the locations of these hidden glaciers and ice-filled valleys - first confirmed by radar two years ago - adds clues about how these deposits may have been left as remnants when regional ice sheets retreated. The subsurface ice deposits extend for hundreds of ... read more
