Australia gives green light for F-35s

Australia has given its final approval for the first group of Joint Strike Fighters, worth $3 billion for 14 aircraft to be delivered in 2014. The Ministry of Defense said the F-35 aircraft will be handed over in the United States, ready to begin initial training and test activities and are to replace Australia's F/A-18F Super Hornets. Boeing has delivered the first two Project Wedgetail 737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW and C) aircraft to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). On 21 August 2009, the Montara offshore oil platform in the Timor Sea (a large sea bordering the Indian Ocean, to the northeast of Australia) started leaking oil.
