Grimsby, Canada (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
When Tony Garchinski heard a loud crash just after 9 p.m. on Friday, September 25 he didn't think much of it. That is, until he awoke the next morning to find the windshield of his mom's Nissan Pathfinder with a huge crack in it. German firm eyes missile detection system: company
    Brussels (AFP) Oct 16, 2009
A German firm is trying to develop a space-based system for detecting when medium-range missiles are fired, which could protect Europe without annoying Russia, a company official said Friday. Satellite Data Look Behind The Scenes Of Deadly Earthquake
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 16, 2009
Using satellite radar data and GPS measurements, Chinese researchers have explained the exceptional geological events leading to the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake that killed nearly 90 000 people in China's Sichuan Province. "One of the very fundamental issues for understanding an earthquake is to know how the rupture is distributed on the fault plane, which is directly related to the amount of ... more

With a surprise Nobel Peace Prize in hand, President Barack Obama came under pressure Friday to make strides in his quest to rid the world of nuclear weapons, a goal experts said would be slow in coming. "It's a long-term goal and a long voyage over a pretty big ocean of nuclear disarmament," former United Nations nuclear weapons inspector David Albright told AFP. Obama is "trying to tur ... more

French marines aboard trawlers in the Indian Ocean Saturday fired on pirates to repel a dawn attack, as two vessels used in the attack were subsequently captured by Seychelles coastguards, sources said. "Three small launches... (which were) nearly invisible and that we had on the radar at the last moment, chased us," a member of the crew of the Drennac, one of two fishing vessels approached ... more

This fall, a team of modern explorers will fly over Earth's southern ice-covered regions to study changes to its sea ice, ice sheets, and glaciers as part of NASA's Operation Ice Bridge.
