TerraSAR-X Image Of The Month: Piton de la Fournaise
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jun 29, 2009
The image, taken by the German radar satellite TerraSAR-X, shows the volcano 'Piton de la Fournaise' (Furnace Peak) in the south of the island of La Reunion (Indian Ocean). This is the last active volcano on the island and is 2631 metres high. By means of very precise repeat-pass interferometric measurements, TerraSAR-X is able to detect even small movements of the Earth's surface, thus ... read more

Dry Autumns And Winters May Lead To Fewer Tornadoes In The Spring
Athens GA (SPX) Jun 29, 2009
Global warming will likely mean more unpredictable weather, scientists say, and a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia pins down, possibly for the first time, how drought conditions in an area's fall and winter may effect tornado activity the following spring. The study, published today in the journal Environmental Research Letters, is specific to Georgia and the Southeast ... more

Exotic Life Could Sprout From Chemistry On Titan
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 26, 2009
If life exists on Titan, it's anyone's guess what that life looks like. Saturn's largest moon is not a good candidate for Earth-like life because it usually lacks liquid water on the surface. But one of Titan's most promising features is the presence of lakes filled with liquid hydrocarbons, or molecules made of hydrogen and carbon, such as methane and ethane. These lakes were recently ... more

New Instrument Could Detect Water Deep Underground On Mars
San Antonio TX (SPX) Jun 25, 2009
With the whoosh of compressed gas and the whir of unspooling wire, a team of Boulder scientists and engineers tested a new instrument prototype that might be used to detect groundwater deep inside Mars. The Mars Time Domain Electromagnetic Sounder (MTDEM) uses induction to generate electrical currents in the ground, whose secondary magnetic fields are in turn detected at the planetary ... more

QuikScat Finds Tempests Brewing In Ordinary Storms
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 26, 2009
"June is busting out all over," as the song says, and with it, U.S. residents along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts begin to gaze warily toward the ocean, aware that the hurricane season is revving up. In the decade since NASA's QuikScat satellite and its SeaWinds scatterometer launched in June 1999, the satellite has measured the wind speed and wind direction of these powerful storms ... more

JPL Wind Watcher Blows Into Second Decade
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 23, 2009
NASA's Quick Scatterometer, or QuikScat, mission was conceived, developed and launched less than two years after the unexpected loss of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-1 spacecraft, which carried the NASA Scatterometer in June 1997. Just two years later, on June 19, 1999, the QuikScat spacecraft carrying JPL's SeaWinds instrument was launched ... more

    Hawaii defense strengthened
Pyongyang, North Korea (UPI) Jun 22, 2009
The threat from North Korea's aggressive posture went up another notch as the United States prepared to counter any missile attack from the isolated communist country led by the unpredictable Kim Jong Il. In Hawaii, which a North Korean long-range missile could target, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week ordered a substantial increase of missile and other defense systems. ... more

US fears North Korea missile launch
    Washington (AFP) June 19, 2009
The US military beefed up its Hawaii defenses Friday over fears Pyongyang may launch a missile at the Pacific island chain, as it tracked a North Korean ship possibly carrying banned cargo. The vessel, which has been monitored for days, is the first to be tracked under UN sanctions imposed last week after North Korea's underground nuclear test on May 25. US Defense Secretary Robert Gates ... more

    Washington (AFP) June 18, 2009
The United States has concerns about a possible North Korean missile launch towards Hawaii and has taken steps to ensure the protection of US territory, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday. "We do have some concerns if they were to launch a missile ... in the direction of Hawaii," Gates told a news conference. The defense secretary said he had approved the deployment of THAAD ... more
